Over 60 White Storks & Rare Eagles Arrive In Malta In Migration Event

BirdLife Malta has reported the arrival of a flock of White Storks over the Maltese Islands after being alerted by international conservation partners monitoring the birds' migration in real time.

Several of the White Storks are fitted with GPS tracking devices as part of an international research project led by German ornithologists studying the species' migration routes and behaviour.

Instead of taking the more common western route to Africa through the Strait of Gibraltar, the flock travelled along the Central-Eastern Mediterranean flyway, passing through Italy and Sicily before heading towards Malta.

The tracked birds reached Malta at around 1.30pm yesterday, accompanied by another flock of White Storks, bringing the total number of birds to approximately 67.

Their arrival offers birdwatchers a rare chance to observe one of Europe's most recognisable migratory species while also providing valuable scientific data on migration patterns and the movements of the wider flock.

At the same time, BirdLife Malta members at Buskett also observed several rare eagles, some of which were fitted with satellite tracking tags.

BirdLife Malta is encouraging the public to enjoy the spectacle from a respectful distance and avoid disturbing the birds if they stop to rest or roost.

The organisation said the migration also serves as a reminder of Malta's responsibility to provide safe passage for protected migratory species, including White Storks and birds of prey.
