In 2024, a total of 6,210 tertiary-level graduates were recorded, representing an increase of 6.5% compared with the previous year.

This includes graduates from formal education programmes lasting at least one semester of full-time study, delivered in Malta, whether online or face-to-face, and includes those residing both in Malta and abroad.

Women accounted for 57.3% of all tertiary graduates, outnumbering men at almost all levels of tertiary education, except at ISCED Level 8 (Doctoral or equivalent), where distribution was equal.

For every 100 male graduates, there were 134 female graduates. The total number of institutions offering tertiary education also increased during the year.

Most graduates attained a qualification at ISCED Level 6 (Bachelor’s or equivalent) at 55.2%, followed by 34.4% at ISCED Level 7 (Master’s or equivalent).

The majority of graduates were aged between 20 and 29 years, representing 70.6% of the total. Foreign graduates numbered 2,136, equivalent to 34.4% of all graduates, with non-EU citizens forming 56.3% of this group.


Full-time programmes accounted for 78.6% of graduates, while part-time graduates decreased by 18.7% compared with 2023.

Maltese students predominated at ISCED Levels 6 and 7, while foreign nationals were the majority at Levels 5 and 8. The most popular field of study was Business, administration and law at 33.8%, followed by Health and welfare at 22.3%.

STEM graduates comprised 12.9% of the total, with 534 men and 264 women. Women STEM graduates decreased by 2.9%, and men STEM graduates by 4.1%.

State-run institutions educated most graduates at ISCED Levels 5, 6 and 7, while independent institutions dominated at Level 8. Agriculture, forestry, fisheries and veterinary was the least popular field at 0.4%.
