Over 5,400 Irregular Immigrants Removed From Malta Since 2021

Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Labour, Byron Camilleri confirmed that between 2021 and 31 August 2025, 5,481 irregular immigrants were removed from Malta.

Of these, 2,298 were deported back to their countries of origin, with annual totals of 448 in 2021, 348 in 2022, 599 in 2023, 487 in 2024, and 416 up to August 2025.

A further 3,183 were transferred to other EU Member States, including 122 in 2021, 618 in 2022, 778 in 2023, 937 in 2024, and 728 up to August 2025.

The reasons for removal included individuals not qualifying for asylum, those residing in Malta irregularly, and voluntary returns. The immigrants came from a variety of nationalities, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Colombia, Albania, Egypt, Serbia, Mali, Gambia, Nigeria, Chad, and Senegal.
