Over 5 Million Y-Plate Trips Recorded Between February & May 2026

Demand for Y-Plate services continued to grow strongly during the first four months of 2026, with the number of trips exceeding five million between January and April.

The latest figures show that the sector recorded more than five million trips during the period, compared with just over three million trips in the corresponding months of 2025.

This represents an increase of more than two million trips in just one year, underlining the growing demand for alternative transport options across Malta.

Minister for Sustainable Mobility Chris Bonett highlighted the figures in a social media post, saying that the increase reflects a clear shift in people's transport choices.

"When people are given a good alternative, they no longer depend on their own car. Yes, Y-Plate is also a good alternative," the Minister said.

The figures suggest that more people are choosing Y-Plate services as a practical alternative to using their private vehicles, contributing to broader efforts to reduce traffic congestion and encourage more sustainable mobility.

Government sources noted that the continued rise in demand demonstrates that Maltese residents are increasingly embracing alternative transport services when they are reliable and readily available.

The increase in Y-Plate usage forms part of the wider objectives of the Malta in Motion plan, which focuses on expanding transport choices and encouraging a shift away from dependence on private cars through incentives and improved mobility options.
