Over 5,500 New Students Start Journey At University Of Malta

The University of Malta has welcomed over 5,500 new students as it begins the 2026 academic year with KSU Freshers’ Week, marking the start of a new chapter for thousands of students through a week of activities, celebrations and opportunities to connect with the University community.
This year, more than 2,500 students will begin undergraduate courses, while over 2,200 students will pursue postgraduate studies. The University will also welcome around 350 Erasmus+ students and approximately 500 visiting students following Micro-credentials.
More than 1,100 new students are also joining Junior College, bringing the total number of JC students to over 2,100.
The academic year was officially launched during an Opening Ceremony at Sir Temi Zammit Hall, where University of Malta Rector Professor Frank Bezzina delivered his first welcome address since taking on the role. KSU President Nick Muscat also addressed the incoming students, highlighting the importance of the university experience beyond academic achievement.
Under this year’s motto, ‘Building Tomorrow through Knowledge, Purpose and Community,’ Professor Bezzina spoke about the University’s role in shaping Malta’s future through research, education and engagement with society. He encouraged students to become more knowledgeable, curious and responsible members of the community.
Following the ceremony, Professor Bezzina, Mr Muscat and Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri visited the University stand to officially launch KSU Freshers’ Week celebrations.
Throughout the week, students at the Msida campus can explore stands featuring student organisations, campus services, games and giveaways. The University said that more than 13,000 students will be studying across 931 courses this academic year, including around 2,000 international students from 130 countries.
Lectures for new students will begin on Thursday 8 October 2026.
