The Maltese tourism sector recorded unprecedented levels of expenditure in 2025, approaching €4 billion.

The Malta Tourism Authority announced these results during the National Tourism Conference, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg highlighting that the EU’s highest increase in guest nights and a substantial rise in expenditure reflect the success of Malta’s long-term tourism strategy.

The country is attracting visitors willing to spend more for unique experiences across Malta and Gozo, he said, aligning with the Tourism Strategy and Malta Vision 2050.

He stressed that the 2025 results leave no room for complacency and outlined initiatives to consolidate the sector’s resilience while managing growth responsibly.

These include promoting year-round tourism, introducing new regulations for hotels and short-term rentals, prioritising value-added events and experiences, coordinating pilot projects in Valletta and Swieqi, investing in improved tourist attractions and infrastructure, and accelerating the digital transition in tourism services, including AI tools for planning and marketing.

In 2025, 4 million tourists visited Malta and Gozo, spending more than €3.9 billion, up 18.6% from 2024 and 44% higher than 2023. Expenditure per visitor rose from €924 to €971.

Total guest nights reached 25.4 million, an 11% increase, the sharpest in the European Union.

Tourists from the UK and Italy remain the ones that visit the islands most.

While overall tourist arrivals grew by 12.9%, off-peak growth reached 19%, demonstrating increasing winter tourism. Ian Borg thanked the MTA, government entities, industry workers and local communities for their vital contribution to Malta’s tourism success.
