During 2025, a total of 384,468 calls were made to Malta’s 112 emergency number. Of these, 184,693 were inappropriate, false or abandoned calls, highlighting the continued need for greater public awareness about the proper use of the service.

From the total, 96,416 genuine calls were escalated to a second level of response: 79.2% were directed to the Emergency Department at Mater Dei Hospital, 12.5% to the Civil Protection Department, 8.1% to the Malta Police Force and 0.2% to the Armed Forces of Malta.

These figures were highlighted in the context of European Emergency Number 112 Day, commemorated annually on 11 February.

To mark the occasion, an educational awareness activity was organised in primary schools in Fgura, aimed at promoting the responsible and appropriate use of 112 and increasing understanding of the role of emergency services.

Students took part in interactive sessions and educational simulations led by members of the Malta Police Force, the Armed Forces of Malta, the Civil Protection Department and the Emergency Department.

Through these activities, they learned when and how to use 112, as well as the importance of emergency services in safeguarding public safety.

Addressing the event, Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment Byron Camilleri spoke about ongoing work on the introduction of Reverse 112, an alert system that will send emergency notifications to all mobile phones connected to local antennas, regardless of the SIM card’s country of origin.

The system is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

Minister Clifton Grima emphasised the importance of holistic education and encouraged students to grow into responsible citizens, including by considering careers in the emergency services.
