During the first quarter of 2026, road traffic accidents increased while casualties decreased compared to the same period in 2025. Road traffic fatalities totalled three.

A total of 3,495 traffic accidents were reported, an increase of 0.8% over the previous year. The Northern Harbour district recorded the highest number of incidents with 1,217 accidents, representing 34.8% of the total.

Despite the rise in accidents, road traffic casualties fell by 5.1% to 282. Of these, 91 people were seriously injured, including 59 drivers, 7 passengers, and 25 pedestrians, cyclists or other road users. Three fatalities were recorded, involving a driver, a pedestrian, and an e-kick scooter rider.

This represents one fewer death compared to the same quarter in 2025. Most seriously injured persons were male, accounting for 76.9% of cases. The largest age group affected was those aged 26 to 40, representing 37.6% of casualties.

Passenger cars were involved in 52.1% of casualties, followed by motorcycles at 35.8% and goods vehicles at 5.7%. Collisions between vehicles accounted for 62.1% of all casualties.

Most accidents occurred on Mondays, with 575 cases, while the highest number of casualties was recorded on Thursdays, with 52 cases. The peak time for accidents was between 12:00 and 14:59, with 24.2% of cases.

Ħal Qormi recorded the highest number of accidents at 229, followed by Birkirkara and Il-Marsa. The Western and Northern districts saw decreases, while the South Eastern district recorded the highest increase at 9.2%.
