Over 20,000 Education Staff In Malta During 2023-24 Academic Year

During the academic year 2023-2024, total teaching and non-teaching staff in formal education in Malta amounted to 20,176, representing a slight increase of 0.1% compared to the previous year.
Of these, 10,461 were employed in teaching and academic roles, while 9,715 held non-teaching or administrative positions.
Women made up the majority of staff in both categories, accounting for 70.0% overall.
Classroom teachers and academic personnel increased by 1.2% from the previous year, driven mainly by a 9.0% rise in tertiary-level staff.
Of all teaching personnel, 27.0% were at the tertiary level, while 24.8% taught at upper secondary and post-secondary non-tertiary levels.
Most teaching staff were women, at 65.4%, and full-time employees represented 79.4% of the total. Foreign teaching staff increased by 14.0%, with the largest proportion employed in private institutions.
At tertiary level, 61.0% of academic staff were men.
The pupil-teacher ratio averaged 9.1 pupils per teacher, with the highest ratio in private schools at 11.8 and the lowest in state schools at 8.1.
Non-teaching staff totalled 9,715, a decrease of 1.1%. Women comprised 74.9%, and teacher aides represented 51.8% of the total.
A third of aides were aged 30 to 39, with most employed in state-run institutions and primary education.
School management and higher-level management roles decreased by 3.6% to 1,429 staff members.
