Over 2,800 Local Births In 2024 Were Maltese: 1,500+ Were Foreign

In a recent parliamentary session, Finance Minister Clyde Caruana revealed that the island welcomed a total of 4,374 babies in 2024, with a substantial number born to foreign parents.
According to the minister’s figures, 1,141 children born last year had parents who are third-country nationals, while over 1,500 births involved non-Maltese parents.
In 1996, 5,038 babies were born to Maltese mothers. By 2007, births had decreased slightly, with 3,765 babies born to Maltese mothers and 246 to foreign mothers.

In 2020, there were 4,414 births in total, including 870 babies born to third-country national mothers.
In 2021, Malta recorded 4,395 births, of which 896 were to third-country national mothers, and in 2022 there were 4,309 births, including 833 to third-country national mothers.

In 2023, a total of 4,462 babies were born, with 1,088 born to third-country national mothers.
