As of 31st of August 2026, a total of 2,720 non-EU citizens who fled Ukraine had temporary protection status in Malta.

This was out of a total of 4.43 million across the EU, with Germany receiving the majority of refugees at over 1,294,555 (or 29.2% of EU total).

Poland and Czechia followed in 2nd and 3rd place at 21.2% and 9%. The ratio to EU population per 1,000 people was 9.8.

This goes back to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February of 2022, which has not yet abetted and still continues to create rifts on the European continent.
