2,174 domestic violence cases were reported across Malta and Gozo during 2025, according to parliamentary data tabled in the House of Representatives.

The information was requested by PN MP Jerome Caruana Cilia in a parliamentary question to Home Affairs, Security and Employment Minister Byron Camilleri, who confirmed that the official figures had been placed on the parliamentary table.

In his reply, Minister Camilleri stressed that domestic violence remains “a scourge in society” and highlighted the importance of continued collective efforts to combat it, while encouraging victims to come forward without fear.

The locality-based figures show that San Pawl il-Baħar recorded the highest number of cases (145), followed by Mosta (106), Birkirkara (87), Marsaskala (82) and Qormi (81). Other high-reporting localities include Żejtun (74), Żabbar (72), Paola (67), Żebbuġ (65) and Msida (64).

Minister Camilleri recalled that in 2020, the Malta Police Force set up a specialised Gender-Based and Domestic Violence Unit, offering a multidisciplinary service involving not only police officers but also trained professionals.

This led to the opening of dedicated hubs in Santa Luċija and Gozo, with a third hub in Imtarfa now completed and expected to begin operating in the coming days.

Among further initiatives, the Minister said that panic alarm services were introduced last year, while support services provided by the Victim Support Agency continue to be strengthened.

He concluded by emphasising the need to keep building awareness and an environment where victims feel safe to report abuse.
