More than 2,000 people sought emergency care at Mater Dei Hospital for mental health or psychiatric concerns in 2025, according to figures tabled in Parliament.

Parliamentary data shows that the hospital recorded 2,038 Accident and Emergency attendances linked to mental health or psychiatric issues during 2025.

This followed 1,969 such attendances in 2024, representing an increase of 69 cases, or around 3.5%. In 2023, the hospital registered 2,020 emergency attendances, meaning the annual total has remained consistently close to or above the 2,000 mark over the past three years.

Figures for the first eight months of 2026 show 1,361 attendances between January and August. If the same pace continues for the remainder of the year, the total would be on course to exceed 2,000 once again.

The statistics relate specifically to visits to Mater Dei Hospital's Accident and Emergency Department where individuals sought urgent assistance for mental health or psychiatric conditions.
