Over 2,000 Express Interest To Plant Over 115,000 Trees Across Malta

Project Green’s first nationwide tree planting initiative has attracted remarkable public interest, with more than 2,000 individuals expressing their wish to plant over 115,000 trees across Malta and Gozo.
The project, launched two months ago, invited landowners to register plots where trees could be planted. In total, the submissions cover around 5 million square metres of land.
Project Green will distribute the trees free of charge as part of a 1.5 million euro investment.
Environment Minister Miriam Dalli welcomed the response, describing it as proof that collaboration between the public and national entities can drive meaningful environmental change.
She noted that the number of people coming forward shows a clear desire among Maltese and Gozitans to contribute to a greener future.
Project Green CEO Joseph Cuschieri echoed this sentiment, saying the level of engagement has far exceeded expectations.
He expressed gratitude for the strong public commitment to sustainability and said the initiative gives the agency confidence to launch similar schemes in the future.
Cuschieri highlighted the environmental benefits of tree planting, from improved air quality to enhanced biodiversity and greater climate resilience. The project will also support the EU target of planting 3 billion trees by 2030.
The initiative aims to promote long term environmental sustainability, strengthen community collaboration, and encourage shared responsibility for protecting natural spaces.
Project Green received 2,077 expressions of interest and will now begin validating each submission to ensure compliance with scheme conditions. Further updates will be provided once assessments are completed.
