Local

The Malta Tax and Customs Administration, working closely with the Malta Police Force Drug Squad, has intercepted a substantial quantity of suspected cocaine during a joint operation carried out at the Malta Freeport Terminal on 9 June 2026.

The seizure followed intelligence-led profiling and routine targeting procedures conducted by Customs officials, who identified a container as potentially suspicious.

The container had originated from Moin, Costa Rica, and was passing through Malta on its way to Libya.

Following further assessment, it was subjected to detailed scanning and a comprehensive physical inspection.

During the search, Customs officers discovered what is believed to be approximately 113 kilograms of cocaine concealed within legitimate cargo.

The Malta Police Force Drug Squad was immediately informed and assisted in securing the site while initiating the necessary investigative procedures.

Authorities noted that this latest interception forms part of a series of successful operations carried out at the Malta Freeport in recent months, where significant quantities of illicit drugs have been uncovered hidden inside transhipment containers.

A magisterial inquiry has been launched and investigations are ongoing to establish those responsible for the attempted trafficking operation.
