Over 100 Young Drivers Gave Up Driving Licenses For €25,000

More than 100 young drivers have reportedly surrendered their licences in exchange for €25,000 each under a government scheme aimed at reducing traffic congestion, according to parliamentary estimates.
Transport Minister Chris Bonett, responding to a parliamentary question from Shadow Minister Bernice Bonello, did not provide the exact figure but confirmed that applications account for “more than 50%” of the scheme’s allocated funds.
With a total budget of €5 million, each successful participant receives €25,000 in annual instalments of €5,000 over five years.
The scheme can accommodate a maximum of 200 participants.
The Driving Licence Surrender Scheme, launched in January, targets drivers aged up to 30 who agree not to drive for five years, in Malta or abroad.
Participants must complete 15 hours of driving tuition if they wish to reapply for a licence after the period ends and face a €5,000 penalty plus legal proceedings if caught driving during the suspension.
