Over 1 Million Passengers Used Fast Ferry In Single Year

For the first time since the fast ferry between Valletta and Mġarr, Gozo began operating, more than one million passengers have used the service in a single year.
With over 1,150,000 passengers recorded by the end of November, 2025 reflects a new record and a substantial increase on last year’s figures.
Above all, these numbers confirm the need for this service and the importance of this mode of transport, which strengthens connectivity between different localities across the Maltese islands.
A number of new routes are planned to come into effect over the coming year. Connections between Malta and Gozo will double as new fast ferry services from Sliema and Buġibba to Gozo are introduced.
The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, Chris Bonett, emphasised the importance of considering the sea as part of the future transport solution, as it is an efficient and reliable mode that offers a sustainable alternative.
He said, “The Government is committed to continuing to invest in the ferry service, including an extension towards the south of Malta to connect the entire eastern coastline.”
He explained that work is currently under way on a new ferry landing in Marsaskala, which will eventually lead to a new service to Valletta.
