Oriental Hornets Surge Across Malta In 2025

According to The Exterminator, the Oriental Hornet (Vespa orientalis) is making a strong comeback across Malta in 2025, with sightings and removal requests rising sharply. After a population boom in 2022 and a subsequent decline due to pest-control efforts, residents are now reporting increasing encounters with the aggressive species.

The hornets pose a serious threat, delivering painful stings and damaging local beehives. In 2022, they were linked to the destruction of around 70% of Maltese honeybee colonies, threatening pollination and agriculture.

Experts warn that the insects thrive in urban areas, nesting in cracks, vents, and discarded food, particularly near stray-animal feeding spots. The Exterminator reports responding to up to 15 hornet-related callouts daily and removing thousands of nests annually.

Residents are urged not to disturb hornets or nests and to contact professionals for safe removal. Early intervention, especially targeting queen hornets in spring, and improved waste management can help control the growing population.
