Oral Health Training Programme Launched For Elderly Care

The Authority for the Standards of Older Persons has launched a comprehensive information and training programme on oral health, specifically designed for carers working in residential homes for older persons across Malta and Gozo. This is the first programme of its kind.
The initiative aims to improve carers’ knowledge and skills in promoting and maintaining good oral health among elderly residents, who are often at greater risk of developing dental conditions.
As part of the programme, carers from every residential home will take part in structured group training sessions, alongside individual practical training. These sessions will also include resident screenings within each home, allowing carers to apply what they learn in real life situations under professional guidance.
Participants will also be provided with practical tools and clear guidelines to help them identify, document and report oral health related issues. This will support timely referrals to dental professionals and appropriate services, contributing to better health outcomes and an improved quality of life for elderly residents.
Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Malcolm Paul Agius Galea said the initiative represents a practical investment in the holistic wellbeing of older persons, including oral health.
Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, George Fenech, added that the programme strengthens prevention, education and professional standards, while helping carers identify issues early and provide more effective and dignified care.
