Opposition leader and Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg has expressed support for Prime Minister Robert Abela’s stance on the future of Fort Tigné, particularly in relation to plans to redevelop the site into a hotel.

The comments follow an announcement by MIDI last week confirming that it had entered into a promise of sale to transfer its lease of Fort Tigné to developer Joseph Portelli for €2.5 million. Portelli has since publicly stated that he intends to convert the historic fort into a luxury hotel.

In an interview with Times of Malta, Prime Minister Abela said the government would do “all it can to protect the national interest” when it comes to the future of the landmark fortification.

Reacting to the developments, Borg took to Facebook to underline the importance of preserving public and open spaces, arguing that heritage sites such as Fort Tigné should remain accessible to all. He said that government intervention would be appropriate, provided commercial responsibilities are respected, in order for the site to be returned to public use.
