Speaker of the House of Representatives Carmelo Abela emphasised the importance of keeping Parliament connected to the realities of citizens during a series of meetings and visits in Gozo.

“The work of Parliament must go beyond its walls. We must broaden collaboration and participation so that parliamentary work is more closely connected to the realities of society,” Abela said during the visit, which included meetings with political representatives, social service providers and local businesses.

The Speaker’s programme began with his participation in events marking the opening of the Judicial Year in Gozo. He attended Mass at the Church of Santa Savina, concelebrated by Gozo Bishop Anton Theuma, followed by a ceremony at the Gozo courthouse.

During a meeting at the Ministry for Gozo, Abela met with Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri and Shadow Minister for Gozo Frank Anthony Tabone, where discussions focused on parliamentary work and issues affecting Gozo. He stressed the importance of mutual respect and professionalism within Parliament, even when political views differ.

The Speaker also visited the Foundation for Social Welfare Services (FSWS) offices in Gozo, where staff explained the social services they provide and the challenges they encounter. He thanked employees for their dedication, describing their work as a vocation that provides support beyond what laws and structures can offer.

Abela said that institutions gain a better understanding of society’s needs by listening directly to people and organisations working on the ground. He also highlighted his commitment to promoting awareness of parliamentary democracy among young people, saying that participation must continue beyond election day.

As part of the visit, the Speaker met representatives from local businesses Lord Chambray and Gozo Cottage. He highlighted the importance of Parliament maintaining direct contact with businesses and workers to better understand their challenges, opportunities and contributions to the community.
