Online Patrols, Revenge Porn Helpline And Deepfake Laws Proposed By Labour

New laws targeting deepfake abuse and revenge porn were among the digital safety proposals announced by Prime Minister Robert Abela during a discussion organised by Labour Women in Floriana on Wednesday evening.

As part of Labour’s manifesto for the general election on 30 May, the party said a new Labour government would introduce legislation against image-based abuse and the abusive use of deepfake technology, which has become an increasing concern internationally due to the spread of fake and manipulated content online.

Labour also pledged to launch a dedicated revenge porn helpline aimed at offering immediate support to victims of the crime, helping people access assistance more quickly during sensitive situations.

Another proposal would see the Police increase so-called “online patrols” to identify risks and take action in cases involving online abuse or harmful activity. The measure is intended to better protect children and vulnerable individuals using digital platforms.

The party also said victims of domestic violence would be able to testify through video conferencing, while related court procedures would be concluded as quickly as possible. The proposal aims to reduce pressure and emotional stress on victims during legal proceedings.

The measures form part of Labour’s wider digital and social policy proposals ahead of the upcoming general election.
