Old-School Malta: Things We Used to Do That Gen Z Will Never Understand

Back in the good old days, Malta was a totally different place. There were no smartphones, no Wi-Fi, and definitely no TikTok. Here are some things we used to do that Gen Z just wouldn’t get – and honestly, we kind of miss them!
1. Dial-Up Internet That Took Ages to Connect
That loud beep-boop sound meant you were going online. But no one could use the landline while you surfed the web!
2. Renting VHS Tapes from the Local Shop
Netflix? Please. We had to rewind our movies or get charged extra!
3. Writing Letters and Waiting Days for a Reply
Yes, actual paper letters with stamps. Waiting for the post was a thrill.
4. Going to the Festa Just to Win a Teddy from the Rifles
You could spot the best shooters by their giant stuffed animal collection.
5. Playing with Bottlecaps and Marbles in the Street
No controllers needed – just chalk, coins, and your mates.
6. Watching Cartoons on ONE Channel, at ONE Time
No YouTube. You missed it? Too bad. You had to wait until next week.
7. Taking Photos with Film Cameras
You had to wait days to see if your photo was blurry. No filters, no deletes.
8. Buying Kinnie in a Glass Bottle at the Beach Kiosk
It tasted better somehow. And yes, you had to return the bottle.
9. Calling Your Friends from a Red Phone Box
You actually memorised phone numbers, no contacts list!
10. Going to Valletta as a Big Day Out
A bus ride, pastizzi, and new socks from Suq tal-Belt made for an epic Saturday.
Gen Z, we love you, but your phones didn’t raise you, the street did.
