OHSA Urge Workers To Proceed With Caution Following Red Weather Warning

The Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) has issued a public notice urging caution in light of the red weather alert announced by the Civil Protection Department, as strong winds continue to batter the Maltese islands.
The Authority is appealing to employers, contractors and workers to exercise heightened vigilance, particularly on construction sites and during outdoor works. Activities close to the sea should be avoided, while work at heights or near unstable structures, including roofs, scaffolding and elevated walkways, is strongly discouraged.
OHSA warned that severe weather conditions may cause structural damage to workplaces. Project Supervisors and Health and Safety professionals are therefore required to carry out necessary inspections to identify and immediately address any hazards that could endanger workers.
Stakeholders are reminded to secure or remove loose materials, tools and temporary structures, ensure signage reflects current conditions, and keep emergency access routes clear. Caution is also advised near trees, power lines and temporary installations.
Workers are encouraged to plan travel carefully and remain alert for debris. Additionally, tower cranes must be left free to slew when unattended and must not carry suspended loads.
For further information, the Authority’s helpline is available on 138.
