NUMBER OF REGISTERED UNEMPLOYED PERSONS INCREASES COMPARED TO 2025

The NSO have revealed that the number of registered unemployed persons in Malta stood at 1,287 in March 2026, marking a year-on-year increase of 230 individuals compared to March 2025, according to data published by Jobsplus.
The figures show that registrations under Part I of the unemployment register rose by 244 persons, while Part II registrations recorded a slight decrease of 14 individuals. Men continued to represent the majority of registrants, accounting for 65.1% of the total (838 individuals), while women made up 34.9% (449 individuals).
Unemployment increased across all age groups, with the most notable rise observed among those aged 25 to 29. This suggests a growing pressure on younger working-age adults entering or re-entering the labour market.
In terms of duration, the largest increase was recorded among individuals who had been registered for under 21 weeks, rising by 133 persons. Meanwhile, those registered for more than one year showed a marginal decrease of one person, indicating relative stability in long-term unemployment.
The number of persons with a disability registering for work fell by 16 compared to the same period in 2025, bringing the total to 206. Of these, 68.4% were male.
Overall, the data points to a slight increase in unemployment, with notable shifts across age, gender, and job-seeking categories.
