Nominations Open For 2026 National Volunteer Of The Year Awards

Nominations have opened for the 2026 National Volunteer of the Year Awards, an initiative organised by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) to recognise individuals, organisations and initiatives that have made a significant contribution to the voluntary sector.

The main award, the National Volunteer of the Year Award, will be presented to an individual who has made a positive impact through voluntary work or inspired others through their dedication and commitment.

Other categories include the National Voluntary Organisation of the Year Award, the National Award for a Private Company that has distinguished itself through its support for the sector, the National Young Volunteer of the Year Award for volunteers aged between 16 and 30, and the Victor Calvagna Award for Child Volunteer of the Year, which recognises volunteers aged between 10 and 15.

Two special awards will also be presented by the MCVS. The National Special Award for Voluntary Work will recognise an individual who has dedicated their life to voluntary service, while the National Special Award for Voluntary Sector Project of the Year will highlight an exceptional project carried out within the sector.

The launch of the awards took place at Dar tal-Providenza, which has seen several volunteers receive recognition in previous editions. These include Dr George Grech and Tony Sammut, who were named Volunteer of the Year in 2020 and 2024 respectively, as well as Monsignor Victor Grech, who received a special award in 2024.

Minister for Inclusion and Volunteering Julia Farrugia said the awards provide an opportunity to thank those who dedicate their time and skills to supporting others, while encouraging greater recognition of the voluntary sector’s contribution to society.

MCVS Chairperson Gertrude Buttigieg said the 15th edition of the awards reflects the wide range of volunteering work carried out across Malta and Gozo, recognising the efforts of different individuals and organisations.

MCVS Chief Executive Mauro Pace Parascandolo encouraged people to nominate those who play an important role within voluntary organisations, saying that such recognition can serve as a lasting appreciation of their work.

Nominations can be submitted through the vofunding.org.mt portal until Thursday, 29 October 2026 at noon. The awards ceremony will be held on 10 December 2026 in connection with International Volunteer Day, marked by the United Nations on 5 December.
