No Prime Minister Should Intrude in Court Justice Decisions Says Alex Borg

In an address to the nation, Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg has urged Prime Minister to respond to accusations made by Judge Lawrence Mintoff.
These accusations include Abela saying Labour Party diehards would oppose chief justice nominations from any of the four judges indicated by the opposition, and that he believes nominating any of the four would increase Alex Borg’s stature.
The Prime Minister, Mintoff claimed, also wants to leave the chief justice appointment after the election and that Abela was also against Joseph Azzopardi’s appointment as chief justice.
Mintoff also accused Abela, as a lawyer, of bullying court employee and insinuated that Mintoff was linked with one of the parties in a charity event law suit. He said Abela was also more interested in money than the judiciary’s independence.
Alex Borg said in his speech that the Prime Minister should respond to all these accusations, including that Abela is more concerned with money than with the proper appointment.
That these accusations are taking place is shocking, said Borg. He urged the Prime Minister to clarify whether these accusations of bullying are true.
Bullying tactics that occurred, Borg said, while a serious case presided over by the same judge was ongoing.
In response, the Labour Party said that Borg left out what the Opposition’s response to the Government’s second proposed name for the position of Chief Justice is.
‘The name was submitted for discussion last Wednesday, and the Opposition had promised a reply by the following Monday, that is, yesterday. To date, the Opposition has said nothing.
