During a parliamentary session on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, Nationalist Party MP and Opposition Spokesperson for Equality and Civil Liberties, Graziella Attard Previ, asked Prime Minister Robert Abela whether the government had ever approached the family of the late journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia to discuss the possibility of a national monument in her honour.

Attard Previ referred to previous parliamentary questions and pressed for clarification on whether any discussions had taken place to formally recognise Caruana Galizia’s legacy through a public memorial.

In his response, Prime Minister Abela said that there are currently no discussions underway regarding such a monument. He added that the government “has always shown respect towards the memory of Mrs Caruana Galizia and her family, not only on the anniversary of her death but throughout the year.”

Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated on 16 October 2017 when a car bomb exploded outside her home in Bidnija. Her work exposed high-level corruption, money laundering, and ties between business and politics, and she was internationally recognised for her fearless reporting. This year marked the 8th anniversary since her death.

A public inquiry later concluded that the Maltese state bore responsibility for fostering a “culture of impunity” that enabled the attack. Several individuals have since been convicted or are facing trial in connection with the assassination.

Calls to honour Daphne Caruana Galizia’s legacy with a national monument have resurfaced repeatedly in recent years, with Opposition figures and civil society groups arguing that her contribution to press freedom and democracy deserves formal recognition.

Prime Minister Abela’s latest statement confirms that, for now, no plans or discussions are taking place to establish a monument dedicated to the late journalist.
