As part of its Plan Ahead. Arrive Safe campaign for the back-to-school period, Transport Malta has confirmed that no permits for roadworks will be issued during peak hours within 500 metres of schools, except in urgent cases.

The measure, announced by Transport Minister Chris Bonett and Transport Malta CEO Kurt Farrugia, is aimed at easing congestion and improving safety for students, parents, and staff during the busy school run.

In addition, 80 officials will be deployed across 33 locations starting Monday to help manage the expected rise in traffic.

Other initiatives include the continuation of the free tow truck service, introduced in 2022 to quickly clear vehicles after accidents, and the opening of a new Park & Ride facility in Ta’ Qali on 28th September, initially offering 120 spaces with plans for expansion.

Bonett noted that while traffic flow has improved overall, congestion during peak hours remains a reality of Malta’s busy economy.
