Nine Years On & Malta Still Asking Who Ordered Daphne’s Murder, Says PN

Partit Nazzjonalista Leader and Opposition Leader Alex Borg said that Malta cannot close the chapter on the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia until every effort has been made to uncover the full truth behind the murder.

Addressing a press conference alongside the PN Parliamentary Group, Borg said that although the party had exercised caution throughout the trial, it was now time to ensure that both Caruana Galizia's family and the public learned the truth.

He stressed that while he had confidence in the judicial process, he did not trust the Government, which the Public Inquiry found had created the culture of impunity that led to the assassination.

Borg said he had spoken with members of Caruana Galizia's family following the verdict, highlighting their continuing search for justice almost nine years after the murder.

He argued that the change of Prime Minister had not brought a change of Government and questioned whether enough had been done to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.

The Opposition Leader also referred to the trial, saying evidence had showed links between several individuals implicated in the case and senior Government officials.

He noted that the judge had ordered testimony and material relating to third parties to be referred for investigation where criminal responsibility was suspected, and called on the police to investigate without delay.

Borg announced that during today’s parliamentary debate the Opposition would table the recommendations of the Public Inquiry, together with proposals for legislative reform. He said stronger institutions were needed to ensure that the police, judiciary, journalists and public officials could carry out their duties free from fear or interference.
