“Nine Years After Daphne’s Assassination Malta Still Without Justice”, Says Alex Borg

PN Leader Alex Borg has said that Malta remains without full justice nine years after the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, arguing that those who commissioned the murder have still not been held accountable.

Speaking during an interview with Professor Andrew Azzopardi in Birkirkara, Borg said the Partit Nazzjonalista would continue calling for the full implementation of the recommendations of the Public Inquiry, which he described as necessary for restoring trust in the country’s institutions.

Borg said that throughout the trial he had avoided turning the judicial process into a political issue, but argued that the Opposition had a responsibility to comment following the jury’s verdict.

He said caution should not be interpreted as weakness and that the PN would continue seeking action rather than “just words”.

Addressing the verdict itself, Borg said it was not his role as Opposition Leader to judge the jury’s decision. However, he said any necessary investigations should take place if evidence emerges suggesting that jurors did not act in accordance with the oath they had taken.

On the presidential pardon granted to Melvin Theuma, Borg said the decision on whether it should be withdrawn rests with Prime Minister Robert Abela. He recalled that Abela had previously served as a Cabinet consultant when the pardon was granted and said: “Nine years later, justice has still not been served.”

Borg also raised concerns about the role of the Home Affairs Minister in relation to investigations and repeated the PN’s criticism of the Attorney General’s handling of the case.

He also said the PN remained open to discussions on political party financing, while questioning whether the Government was genuinely prepared to engage in reform.
