A national nine-year plan aimed at modernising and strengthening Malta and Gozo’s electricity distribution system has been officially launched, with significant investment earmarked for infrastructure upgrades, new distribution centres and improved grid resilience.

The plan was announced during a press conference addressed by Minister for the Environment and Energy Miriam Dalli and Enemalta Executive Chairman Ing Ryan Fava. It outlines a long-term strategy to prepare the national grid for rising demand, economic growth and future energy challenges.

Key measures include the construction of 12 new distribution centres, the development of a new 132kV interconnector between Malta and Gozo, and targeted projects designed specifically to improve Gozo’s energy security. The initiative builds on recent investments while expanding the system’s flexibility and reliability.

During the same event, Enemalta also unveiled its new branding under the slogan “Energy that moves you!”, reflecting the company’s evolving role as a provider of essential services and its focus on modern, resilient and sustainable infrastructure.

Minister Dalli emphasised that the plan is already being implemented, noting that following the summer of 2023, investment was accelerated to deliver results more quickly. She highlighted that these upgrades are being carried out while maintaining stable energy prices for households and businesses.

Ing Fava said Enemalta has already made significant progress through a phased reinforcement programme. Over the past two years, €90 million has been invested in strengthening the distribution network, with a further €40 million allocated to new distribution centres expected to be completed by mid-year.

Initial phases have already delivered tangible improvements, including the installation of more than 140 kilometres of new underground cables, leading to reduced outage durations and a more resilient national grid.
