Ġnien Il-Larinġ Inaugurated On Ħal Lija Site Previously Marked For Development

A 750 square metre site in Ħal Lija that had previously been earmarked for development has instead been transformed into a new public garden through a Project Green initiative.

Named Ġnien il-Larinġ, the open space now offers residents a place to relax and socialise, with around 1,264 people living within a 10-minute walk of the garden.

The project was inaugurated by Environment Minister Miriam Dalli, together with the Project Green team, Ħal Lija Mayor Anthony Dalli and members of the local council.

Preparatory works included the removal of around 15 tonnes of waste, allowing the neglected site to be regenerated. Accessible pathways, new seating areas and a loggia with sanitary facilities were added, turning an inaccessible area into a welcoming community space.

The design draws inspiration from traditional village life in Ħal Lija, encouraging residents to meet and spend time outdoors in a safe and peaceful setting.

The village's association with citrus trees inspired the garden's name, with 25 new trees planted alongside existing citrus trees. Around 900 plants and shrubs, including lavender, rosemary, sage and thyme, have also been introduced to provide colour, fragrance and shade.

Speaking during the inauguration, Minister Miriam Dalli said: "Today, we are giving an open space back to the public instead of seeing this site developed. Park after park, we are continuing to implement our vision for our communities, where more families can enjoy open spaces."

Project Green Head of Design Benjamin Vassallo said historic wells had been restored for irrigation and sensory pathways created using natural materials, while Mayor Anthony Dalli praised the transformation of a neglected site into a garden for the whole community.
