New Working Holiday Scheme For Youths Of Maltese Descent Announced

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, has announced a new Working Holiday for Youths of Maltese Descent Scheme, aimed at making it easier for young people of Maltese heritage to visit Malta for work or study while exploring their roots.
The scheme, launching in January 2026, will target 18 to 30-year-olds from the Maltese diaspora, offering them the opportunity to reconnect with family in Malta, gain work experience, and learn new skills.

Borg unveiled the initiative during his opening address at the 17th Annual Meeting of the Council for the Maltese Living Abroad, the first gathering since amendments to the Council Act expanded its membership to 21 for broader and more balanced representation.
“The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, with the support of other authorities, is encouraging these young ambassadors of Malta and Gozo from across the world to come and learn more about the culture and traditions of our islands,” Borg said.
The Deputy Prime Minister also welcomed newly appointed Council members, thanking returning members for their contributions and commending those whose terms had ended, including outgoing secretary Joseph Xerri, for his long and dedicated service.
Borg emphasised the importance of collaboration to strengthen Malta’s global presence. “The strength of Malta’s global presence lies in the bonds we maintain with our diaspora,” he noted, highlighting the Council’s central role in fostering these connections.
