The launch of the cable-laying vessel Nexans Electra marks a significant milestone in the development of Malta’s second electricity interconnector (IC2) with Italy.

Energy Minister Miriam Dalli attended the official inauguration ceremony in Norway, alongside representatives from InterConnect Malta and Nexans, highlighting the importance of the project for the country’s future energy security and sustainability.

The IC2 project is designed to strengthen Malta’s connection to the European electricity network while enhancing the resilience of the national power system.

Building on the success of the first Malta-Sicily interconnector, commissioned in 2015, the new cable will be installed at a safe distance from the existing connection to minimise the risk of simultaneous disruptions. Once operational, it will improve reliability, provide redundancy and support growing energy demand.

Nexans has already completed the manufacture and testing of the 103-kilometre subsea cable, including spare cable for future maintenance needs.

Offshore installation is expected later this year, with Nexans Electra transporting the entire cable load in a single voyage. The vessel’s advanced dynamic positioning technology will enable precise installation in challenging offshore conditions.

Preparatory works have progressed steadily, including surveys and route clearance operations. Onshore works are also advancing in both Malta and Sicily, with trenching and cable-laying activities nearing completion in several sections.

The €300 million project has secured substantial European Regional Development Fund support, with €261 million allocated through the 2021-2027 programme.

Recognised as an Operation of Strategic Importance, IC2 will play a crucial role in supporting Malta’s energy transition, climate objectives and long-term decarbonisation goals.
