New Treatment Introduced For Prostate Cancer Patients

Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, announced that, with the support of the Radiology Department at Mater Dei Hospital and the Oncology Department at Sir Anthony Mamo Hospital, a new treatment involving rectal spacers is being introduced for patients with prostate cancer.
It was explained that, due to the proximity of the prostate and rectum, this new treatment will ensure that radiation therapy for prostate cancer does not harm the rectum. This treatment, administered in the form of a gel, will protect the rectum during radiotherapy for prostate cancer.

“Around 50 people a year will benefit from this new treatment, with the rectum being better protected, resulting in reduced inflammation and an overall improvement in the quality of life for these patients. I would like to thank the specialists involved, committed to continuing to introduce and provide services and treatments that benefit patients and enhance the standard of healthcare offered in our country,” concluded Dr Abela.
