The Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleansing has announced progress on a major infrastructure project aimed at improving electricity supply in the southeastern region of Malta.

Minister for Energy, Miriam Dalli and Enemalta Executive Chairman Ing. Ryan Fava recently visited cable-laying works in Ħal Qormi, part of the new Siġġiewi Distribution Centre project. Once completed, the centre will enhance the stability, reliability, resilience, and quality of electricity for thousands of households.

Dalli said, “The work to strengthen the distribution system continued even during the summer months. This project alone involves around 70 km of cables, connecting multiple localities to the new distribution centre in Siġġiewi. Through these efforts, we are making the electricity network more resilient and ensuring a reliable supply for everyone.”

Ing. Ryan Fava added, “This project is a crucial step in our ongoing work to modernise Malta’s electricity distribution network. Strategic investments such as the Siġġiewi Distribution Centre ensure that our customers benefit from a more reliable and future-ready energy supply.”

The new centre will bring tangible benefits to customers in Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Siġġiewi, Qormi, Mqabba, and Qrendi, providing a stable, resilient, and high-quality electricity supply capable of meeting the growing demands of both families and businesses.

Financed through the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), the €20 million investment underscores Enemalta’s commitment to modernising energy infrastructure in Malta and Gozo while minimising environmental and community impact.

Enemalta is also constructing a distribution centre in Naxxar and regenerating the centre in Msida, with additional expansion work ongoing at the St Andrew’s centre to further increase capacity.
