A new bronze sculpture celebrating the long-standing friendship between Malta and China has been unveiled on the Marsaskala waterfront.

Titled Lu Yu · Silk Road Tea Break, the sculpture depicts Lu Yu, China’s renowned “Sage of Tea,” taking a moment to enjoy a quiet cup of tea while reflecting on his life’s work. The artwork was created by Professor Lyu Pinchang and donated by the Lyu Pinchang Sculpture Art Museum of Jingdezhen together with participating entrepreneurs to the Malta China Friendship Society, which later gifted it to the Marsaskala Local Council.

The sculpture now forms part of the local community’s cultural landscape and is intended to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

Minister for Equality and Civil Rights Rosianne Cutajar said Malta and China share a long history of dialogue and cooperation built on friendship and mutual respect, dating back to the times of former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff.

She added that Malta will continue strengthening its relations with China while promoting values of diversity, inclusion, and respect. Cutajar said the sculpture enriches Malta’s cultural and artistic heritage and serves as a symbol of friendship, dialogue, and cooperation between the two nations.
