The Housing Authority, National Mental Health Services and Richmond Foundation have signed agreements for a three-bedroom maisonette in Birkirkara to become a specialised residential service for teenagers experiencing mental health challenges.

The residence, the first of its kind operated by Richmond Foundation for young people aged 13 to 17, will support teenagers transitioning back into the community after receiving specialised psychiatric care. It will accommodate up to four residents, with Richmond Foundation staff available around the clock.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Ian Borg said the service represents an important step towards strengthening community-based mental health care.

“We want every young person to find the support they need at every stage of their care. National Mental Health Services identified a need and worked with our partners to create a service specifically designed for teenagers. Through this initiative, we will help them continue their education, participate in community life and look towards the future with greater confidence,” Borg said.

Minister for Housing and Lands Owen Bonnici said the agreement reflects the commitment to supporting people facing challenges, particularly young people experiencing mental health difficulties.

National Mental Health Services will fund the property's completion works and oversee the service's clinical assessments, admissions and care quality. The Housing Authority will subsidise 80% of the rental cost.

The service aims to help teenagers build greater independence and prepare for adult life, while ensuring hospital care remains available whenever clinically required.
