New Rectal Spacer Treatment Launched For Prostate Cancer Patients In Malta

A new treatment using Rectal Spacers is being introduced for prostate cancer patients at Mater Dei Hospital and Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Hospital, with the involvement of the Radiology and Oncology Departments.

The treatment addresses a key challenge: the close proximity of the prostate to the rectum. Rectal Spacers, administered in gel form, create a protective barrier between the prostate and rectum, ensuring that radiation therapy targets the cancer effectively while minimising damage to surrounding tissue.

DIO (the Department of Information) added, “With the participation of the Radiology Department at Mater Dei Hospital and the Oncology Department at Sir Anthony Mamo Hospital, a new Rectal Spacer treatment is being launched for patients with prostate cancer.”
