Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, has announced the launch of a new Rapid-Access Gynaecology Clinic (RAC), providing efficient and high-quality diagnostic services for women referred by primary care professionals. The clinic will operate at both the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre (SAMOC) and St Vincent de Paul Hospital.

The clinic’s primary aim is to quickly assess symptoms that, in some cases, may indicate a serious condition. This includes a new “fast-track” referral system specifically for patients with suspected cancer symptoms or those experiencing post-menopausal bleeding. While most women referred to the RAC will not have serious illness, the clinic’s rapid response and comprehensive diagnostic approach are crucial for providing immediate reassurance and, where necessary, ensuring timely commencement of treatment.

Minister Abela explained that each patient will be evaluated by a multidisciplinary team, with pelvic ultrasound scans and biopsies performed on the same day if needed. He emphasised that this approach aims to offer a more efficient service while reducing patient anxiety. The clinic is expected to receive around 300 new referrals annually.

Minister Abela concluded, “This initiative represents a significant step forward in women’s healthcare, combining earlier diagnosis with a more efficient, patient-centred service. It is a model of care that prioritises the patient and improves outcomes through early diagnosis and timely intervention.”
