New Preist Rev. Jesmond Schembri To Be Ordained This Sunday

The Church in Malta will mark a significant moment on Sunday 8 February 2026 with the ordination of a new priest. Rev. Jesmond Schembri, a deacon of the Greek Catholic Parish of Our Lady of Damascus in Valletta, will be ordained to the priesthood during a solemn Mass at the Church of St Nicholas of Myra, known as Tal-Erwieħ, at 9.30am.
The ordination will be presided over by the Apostolic Exarch to the Greek Byzantine Catholic Church, Mgr Manuel Nin O.S.B., and will take place in the presence of Archbishop Charles Scicluna. The celebration reflects the continued pastoral life of the Greek Catholic community in Malta, which forms part of the wider Catholic Church.
Rev. Schembri is 59 years old and hails from Siġġiewi. He currently resides in Mosta and serves as the Director of the Migrants Commission of the Archdiocese of Malta. He holds a degree in social work and has dedicated much of his professional life to working in this field, particularly with vulnerable communities.
Between 2012 and 2022, he pursued theological studies at the University of Malta, where he obtained a Licentiate in Pastoral Theology. In his future ministry as a priest, Rev. Schembri has expressed his desire to bring God’s mercy to others, especially through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
