New Permanent Scheme To Refund Gozitans Stranded In Malta Due To Bad Weather

A permanent accommodation refund scheme has been introduced for Gozo residents who are left stranded in Malta when the Gozo Channel ferry service is suspended due to extreme weather conditions.
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri announced that the measure, which was included in the Government's electoral manifesto, was implemented within the first 100 days of the new legislature.
The scheme aims to address a specific challenge faced by Gozitan residents who may unexpectedly require accommodation in Malta due to circumstances beyond their control.
Minister Camilleri said the decision to make the scheme permanent would help reduce the financial burden on affected families.
"When the Gozo Channel service is suspended because of extreme weather conditions, Gozo residents can find themselves stranded in Malta and forced to cover accommodation costs themselves. As a Government and Ministry, we were already assisting in such situations. Today, we are taking a further step by making this support permanent, ensuring that affected Gozitans are not left carrying a financial burden caused by circumstances they could not control," he said.
Eligible residents can apply for a refund of accommodation expenses online through the MyGozo App, using their eID via servizz.gov, or by visiting the servizz.gov Hub in St Francis Square, Victoria.
Applicants are required to keep official accommodation receipts and submit the necessary documentation within the established timeframe. The scheme applies to stays in hotels, hostels and other licensed accommodation establishments, subject to the relevant terms and conditions.
Minister Camilleri said the initiative demonstrates the Government's commitment to supporting Gozitans during exceptional situations and ensuring residents are not financially disadvantaged by disruptions outside their control.
