Clint Camilleri, Minister for Gozo and Planning, has announced the opening of the new Ġorġ Pisani Bypass, part of the extensive Marsalforn Road reconstruction project.

The half-kilometre bypass, opened this week, now directs traffic towards Marsalforn without passing through the centre of Victoria (Rabat), Gozo.

Minister Camilleri explained that the works on the Ġorġ Pisani Bypass included the complete construction of a new road from the ground up, along with the installation of new utility services such as lighting, water, drainage, and a new stormwater culvert.

A bridge was also built over the Karawendi valley, while a barrier discovered during excavation was preserved and transformed into a reservoir for rainwater collection.

The project also involved a total upgrade of the junction near the Capuchin Church, with new pavements and landscaped green areas creating a small plaza in front of the church.

This bypass forms part of a wider initiative to reduce traffic congestion around Victoria by providing alternative routes. Earlier this year, other nearby roads were upgraded, easing traffic coming from Żebbuġ, Għarb, San Lawrenz, and Għasri.

Camilleri said the partial opening of the bypass will already help absorb Marsalforn-bound traffic, with full benefits expected once the Marsalforn Road itself reopens.
