The Malta Tourism Authority has launched Merħba! The Tourism Adventure Game, an educational board game aimed at introducing young people to the wide range of career opportunities available within Malta’s tourism industry.

The initiative was developed in collaboration with the Ministry for Tourism and the Ministry for Education and Sport’s National School Wellbeing Services as part of efforts to strengthen career education and encourage students to explore future opportunities in the sector.

Designed for students aged 10 and over, the game allows middle school students to discover different tourism-related professions and the skills required for each role before making important subject and career choices. It will be introduced to students during the current scholastic year as part of its educational programme.

Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela said the interactive game aims to increase students’ awareness of the tourism industry and highlight its contribution to Malta’s economy, while encouraging young people to consider tourism as a sector where they can develop successful careers.

Malta Tourism Authority Chairman Charles Mangion said the project reflects the importance of cooperation between different entities and provides students with greater insight into the variety of roles available within tourism.

Developed with Malta University Enterprises, with support from Professor Leonard Busuttil and Jonathan Barbara, Merħba! uses game-based learning to encourage communication, discussion and strategic thinking.

Through role cards and site cards representing tourism professions and businesses, students learn how different parts of the industry work together to create visitor experiences. The game also encourages players to explain and exchange roles, helping them better understand the responsibilities and skills involved.

The MTA said the initiative forms part of its wider efforts to support career awareness and contribute towards developing a skilled future workforce for Malta’s tourism sector.
