An abandoned plot of land in Ħal Għaxaq, once blighted by illegal dumping, is being transformed into a new open space for residents.

The project was announced by Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleansing, Miriam Dalli, during a site visit.

Minister Dalli said, “Project after project, whether large or small, we are always striving to create more green areas where residents and communities can relax, meet and spend time together. This will be another such space, this time in Ħal Għaxaq, which we are giving back to the residents.”

The initiative will see the planting of a variety of trees and shrubs, the installation of benches, and the creation of a dedicated ‘quiet zone’. Irrigation will be supplied by a permanent reservoir with a capacity of around 12.4 cubic metres, while the space will also feature solar-powered lighting.

Project Manager Dylan Abela Spiteri noted, “As Project Green, we are working tirelessly to provide more open spaces. As with every project, we keep sustainability in mind. This reservoir will ensure trees and shrubs receive adequate watering, and the solar lighting makes the space energy-efficient.”

Ħal Għaxaq Mayor Karl Boxall, together with members of the local council, also attended the visit to show their support for the initiative.
