New Fleet Of Vehicles For Rapid Intervention & Road Policing units Revealed

A new fleet of vehicles has been introduced to strengthen the Rapid Intervention Unit (RIU) and the Road Policing Unit (RPU), following an investment of more than €2 million.
A total of 36 new vehicles have been deployed, with 30 assigned to the RIU and six to the RPU, effectively doubling the operational fleet available to these units. The initiative aims to enhance police capacity, improve response times, and increase visibility across the country.
The fleet was inaugurated by Byron Camilleri and Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi. They described the investment as part of the wider “Malta Prepared” strategy, which focuses on strengthening security, modernising equipment, and improving working conditions within the police force.
Minister Camilleri said the new vehicles support the Police Force’s prevention strategy by ensuring a consistent presence on the streets.
He stressed that visibility is essential for building public trust, deterring crime, and providing reassurance to citizens. He also noted that Malta continues to rank among the safest countries in Europe and globally, with historically low crime levels.
Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi highlighted that around €1 million of the investment was co financed through European Union funds, covering 16 RIU vehicles. He said this support has strengthened operational capacity and improved responsiveness within communities.
Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà said the investment is already producing results, including increased patrols, more road checks, and a reduction in serious traffic incidents. The RPU has also expanded its role, with specialised training and new tools such as roadside drug testing enhancing enforcement and road safety efforts.
