New Ferry Timetable Announced With Extended Operating Hours Until Evening

Ferry services in Malta are set to operate until later in the evening following an extension announced by the Ministry for Sustainable Mobility.

The measure forms part of the Government’s electoral commitments and aims to further strengthen a transport service that has become increasingly popular among passengers.

The extended timetable applies to harbour ferry routes connecting Sliema and Valletta, as well as Cospicua and Valletta. It also covers the fast ferry services linking Valletta, Sliema and Buġibba with Mġarr, Gozo.

The change will allow more passengers to rely on ferry services for later journeys while providing a more convenient and efficient alternative to private car use.

The current extended schedule will remain in place until 31 October 2026, with the upcoming winter timetable also set to include additional crossings to better meet passenger demand.

Minister for Sustainable Mobility Chris Bonett said the extension strengthens connectivity between Malta’s communities and islands.

He highlighted the success of the Sliema, Buġibba and Gozo fast ferry route, which attracted around 250,000 passengers within three months of its introduction.

He said the Government will continue investing in alternative transport solutions, including a planned ferry service connecting Marsaskala with Valletta once infrastructure works at Wied il-Għajn are completed.

Transport Malta Chief Executive Officer Leonid McKay said the increase in demand demonstrates that passengers are seeking alternatives to private cars. He added that additional crossings and longer operating hours represent investment in a more modern, reliable and flexible public transport system.

Under the new extension, harbour ferry services will gain three additional daily crossings, while fast ferry routes will each receive two additional crossings.
