New €2.56 Million Solar Farm Capable Of Powering Around 900 Homes Unveiled

Melita has officially unveiled a new €2.56 million solar farm in Imqabba, marking another step towards increasing Malta's renewable energy generation. Built on a site that was previously used as a quarry, the project is capable of producing enough electricity to meet the annual consumption of around 900 households.
The solar farm was fully financed through private investment and benefited from the Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS) Invitation to Bid (ITB) scheme, which offers renewable energy projects a favourable rate for electricity exported to the national grid. The facility exports all of the electricity it generates directly to the grid.
Minister for Energy and the Environment Miriam Dalli visited the site alongside Melita Chief Executive Officer Harald Roesch and the company's Head of Customer Operations and AI Implementation, Kevin Borg.
During the visit, Minister Dalli praised the investment and encouraged more businesses to follow Melita's example by investing in renewable energy projects. She said initiatives like this demonstrate how clean energy investments can deliver real results while helping Malta strengthen its renewable energy sector.
"This is the way forward, and I encourage more companies to follow suit," the minister said, adding that the government remains committed to supporting projects that contribute to the country's clean energy goals.
The Imqabba facility joins two smaller solar farms already operated by Melita, further expanding the company's renewable energy portfolio.
Melita currently generates renewable energy equivalent to more than 40% of its annual electricity consumption. The company is also working on additional renewable energy projects with the long-term goal of producing enough clean energy to cover 100% of its electricity needs, reducing its environmental impact while contributing more renewable electricity to Malta's national grid.
