Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri has carried out his first official engagement in the education sector since assuming responsibility for the portfolio, visiting Anton Agius Primary School in Rabat to observe the work being undertaken in line with the National Education Strategy 2024-2030.

The visit provided an opportunity for the Minister to meet the school's leadership team, educators, students and support staff, while gaining an insight into the initiatives being implemented to promote inclusion, wellbeing and academic development. The strategy places students at the centre of the education system, with a strong emphasis on empowerment and equal opportunities.

Anton Agius Primary School opened three years ago following a significant investment in modern educational infrastructure.

The school, which previously operated from two separate buildings, now accommodates 422 pupils across 13 kindergarten classes and 18 primary classes. Its facilities include dedicated art and music rooms, a gymnasium, a multi-sensory room and a range of digital learning resources designed to support a modern educational environment.

The school currently supports 48 pupils with different educational needs through the assistance of 40 Learning Support Educators and is also working towards achieving Dyslexia Friendly School status.

During the visit, the Minister was briefed on a number of achievements recorded by the school during the current academic year.

These include awards in mathematics, literacy and digital citizenship, as well as recognition for environmental initiatives through the Eco-Schools programme.

School officials said these accomplishments reflect a commitment to academic excellence, sustainability and responsible technology use.

Several ongoing projects were also highlighted, including a Makerspace initiative funded through Esplora, the Open Horizon project for Early Years pupils and the Green Project, which incorporates outdoor learning spaces, a kitchen garden and areas for scientific experimentation.

The school is also participating in a number of eTwinning and Erasmus+ initiatives that encourage international collaboration and broaden learning opportunities.

Speaking during the visit, Minister Camilleri said the school demonstrates how investment in facilities, innovation and inclusion can create better educational opportunities for students.

Head of School Dorita Maniscalco reiterated the school's commitment to providing a supportive environment where pupils can develop their full potential while benefiting from modern and inclusive educational practices.
